At Moulton School and Science College, we believe that mobile phones can be a distraction from learning and have a negative impact on student well-being. Therefore, we have a strict mobile phone policy in place.
The policy on mobile phones is outlined in the school's Behaviour for Learning Policy. The key points are:
Students are not allowed to use their mobile phones at any time between 8:45 am and 3:15 pm.
This includes breaks and lunchtimes.
Phones must be switched off and out of sight.
The school operates a "See it, Hear it, Take it" policy. This means that if a member of staff sees or hears a phone, or sees earphones, they will confiscate the phone.
There are rare occasions when teachers may allow students to use phones for a learning activity, but this will always be supervised, and phones must be put away immediately after the activity is over.
The policy outlines a clear process for dealing with students who do not follow the rules:
First confiscation: The student can collect their phone from Main Reception at the end of the day.
Second and any subsequent confiscations: A parent/carer or nominated adult must come to the school to collect the phone.
If a student refuses to hand over their phone to a member of staff, they may be given an internal exclusion or even a fixed-term suspension.
Sixth Form students are allowed to use their phones within the Sixth Form block only. However, the same rules apply if a Sixth Form student uses their phone elsewhere in the school.
The mobile phone policy is designed to:
Create a positive learning environment free from distractions.
Protect students' well-being and prevent cyberbullying.
Ensure that all students are safe and secure during school hours.
We ask parents/carers to support the school's mobile phone policy by:
Talking to your child about the policy and ensuring they understand it.
Encouraging your child to use their phone responsibly outside of school hours.
Contacting the school if you have any concerns about your child's use of their mobile phone.
